Turkish domestic rebar spot prices increase, demand moderate

The Turkish domestic rebar market seems to have cooled off today, April 2, following the rapid increase in Turkish mills' rebar prices in the first half of this week. Most local traders have already restocked their material, while most construction companies are exerting pressure for further discounts due to this unpredictable rebar price increase. Expectations are circulating that energy prices, in particular electricity and natural gas prices, may increase by the end of this week. However, no official announcement has yet been made regarding an energy price increase.

Official rebar offers and workable prices from the mills in the Marmara and Izmir regions, including İçdaş' prices, have settled at $610-625/mt ex-works and $605-620/mt, respectively, as compared to March 30. These prices indicate an increase of $10-15/mt over the same period. One Izmir-based mill has set its official rebar price at TRY 32,500/mt ($609/mt) ex-works today. Sources report small tonnages of rebar were traded at TRY 32,200/mt ($603/mt) ex-works in the Izmir region yesterday, close to the workable price in the region. Moreover, rebar spot prices have also increased following Kardemir's announcement of its rebar price at around $607/mt ex-works yesterday.

One of the Iskenderun region-based mills has set its official rebar price today at TRY 32,300/mt ($605/mt) ex-works, also up by TRY 300/mt ($5/mt) compared to March 30. Sources report that several Iskenderun-based rolling mills are offering rebar today to serious buyers at TRY 32,000-32,200/mt ($599-603/mt) ex-warehouse, up by TRY 400/mt ($7/mt) over the same period.

The ongoing currency fluctuations and relatively better demand have triggered an increase in the spot market by TRY 200-500/mt ($3-9/mt). Currently, local 12 mm rebar prices in the spot market are in the range of TRY 32,000-32,500/mt ($599-609/mt) ex-warehouse, depending on the region.
