EU crude steel output ups 10 percent in May 2009

According to the statistics released by the European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries (EUROFER), in May 2009 crude steel production of the 27 member states of the European Union amounted to 10.541 million metric tons, increasing by 10.45 percent compared to April 2009, and decreasing by 44.16 percent year on year.

In the January-May period of the current year, total crude steel production of European Union members amounted to 50.878 million metric tons, down 44.17 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

In May Germany's crude steel production decreased by 47.79 percent to 2.168 million metric tons, French crude steel production declined by 58.70 percent to 991,000 metric tons, Italy's output fell by 41.61 percent to 1.688 million metric tons, Spain's crude steel production decreased by 41.33 percent to1.161 million metric tons while the United Kingdom produced 739,000 metric tons of crude steel, down 38.36 percent, all compared to May 2008.
