Seasonally-adjusted industrial production in the European Union member states (EU-27) in November 2009 rose 0.9 percent month on month, according to a report released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. Thus, the region's industrial output has reached its highest level since November 2008. In October industrial production in the region had decreased by 0.7 percent over September, marking the first decrease following five consecutive months during which industrial production increased.
On the other hand, compared with November 2008, industrial production in the EU-27 in November 2009 declined by 6.4 percent.
In November 2009, production of durable consumer goods in the EU-27 decreased by 0.5 percent month on month and was down 6.2 percent year on year, while production of capital goods increased slightly by 0.7 percent over October and declined by 11.1 percent compared to November 2008. Production of intermediate goods rose by 1.7 percent in November 2009 compared to October, but was down 5.9 percent over the same month of the previous year. In addition, production of energy in the EU-27 decreased by 1.7 percent month on month, while the year-on-year drop was 11.1 percent.
Among the member states for which data are available, in November industrial production rose in sixteen member states and fell in four other member states, compared to October. The highest month-on-month increases were registered in Latvia with 8.7 percent, in Slovenia with three percent and in Estonia with 2.9 percent; meanwhile, the most significant declines were observed in Ireland with eight percent and in Portugal with 3.7 percent.
