On May 5, India-based steelmaker Essar Steel said that it will supply 13,000 mt of heavy plates to build ships for the Indian navy.
Set up at a cost of approximately INR 20 billion ($447 million), Essar Steel's plate mill has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million mt. The mill is capable of producing plates in thickness ranging from 5 to 150 mm, in widths of 900 to 4,900 mm and in lengths of 3 m to 25 m.
Following the related quality tests, Essar's plate products have now been approved by the Indian Navy and the company has received an order from India's state-owned shipyard Mazagoan Dock Limited to supply 13,000 mt of heavy plates to build ships for the Indian navy. This is the first time that Mazagoan Dock has placed an order for such a large consignment of steel plates from a domestic steel mill.
