After five consecutive months of registering new historical records in formal employment in the steel industry in Mexico, employment in June grew a more modest 5.4 percent, year-over-year, to 142,961 workers.
Three states generated nearly a third of the new jobs, according to a SteelOrbis analysis of official data on formal employment (records at the IMSS social security institute) in the Basic Metal Industries, which according to the classifier of the national agency of Inegi statistics correspond to the steel industry.
In May, the largest steel economy in Mexico, by number of jobs, continues to be Nuevo León with 28,370 workers (19.8 percent of the total), followed by Coahuila with 19,955 workers (14.0 percent of the total), the State of Mexico with 13,028 workers (9.1 percent), Guanajuato with 11,745 workers (8.2 percent) and Veracruz with 11,696 workers (8.2 percent of the total). Together these five states concentrate 59.3 percent of the 142,961 employed workers in the country.
In June, the steel industry in Mexico contributed 2.36 percent of total manufacturing employment (6.06 million workers) or 0.65 percent of total formal employment in Mexico that totaled 21.89 million workers.
