Dutch trade union calls on government to support Tata Steel Nederland’s decarbonization efforts

Dutch trade union FNV has called on the Dutch government to reach agreements with Tata Steel Nederland, a subsidiary of Indian steelmaker Tata Steel, to support the latter’s steel production decarbonization efforts.

“A breakthrough is needed now. This is not only important for the employees and local residents of the steel company, it would also have enormous significance for the necessary greening of the entire Dutch industry,” Bas van Weegberg, member of the FNV executive board, said.

Over the past two years, the Dutch government and the management of Tata Steel have been unable to reach firm agreements on decarbonization support. “The first green shovel could have been in the ground last year if management and politicians had worked together. Because of all the delaying, new threats are emerging,” Cihan Lacin, director of FNV Tata Steel, stated.
