Both Mexican and the US steel industry should fight unfair competition with China and avoid AD duties for NAFTA members, an industry member said this week.
According to media reports, Deacero’s president, Raúl Gutiérrez Muguerza, proposed to members of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) a regional integration among NAFTA country members.
“Mexico, Canada and the US haven’t made the homework, we haven’t solved the problem that China represents to all of us,” the executive said during a meeting in Chicago.
Muguerza asked AISI members to embrace the concept of a North American steel industry that could work together against common threats, media reports said.
During his speech, the executive mentioned Deacero’s expansion operations in the US and criticized the lack of functionality of the NAFTA steel sector.
Muguerza said the steel industry in Mexico, the US and Canada should request their governments to put in place a consultation process that could allow them to compete as a region against China.
Media reports said Mexico has a steel deficit compared to the US, as the US country continues to apply AD measures against its partner. Reports said Mexico only has only one AD measure against US steel exports.
