Brazilian steelmaker Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) said on Monday it was granted a provisional license to operate its Presidente Vargas mill, located in the city of Volta Redonda, in the state of Rio, for 180 days effective on December 8.
As previously reported by SteelOrbis, INEA, a Rio de Janeiro state environment authority, demanded Brazilian steelmaker Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) halt operations at its Presidente Vargas mill. The halt was expected to last until December 10. However, the company said on Monday it can still operate for a further 180 days.
CSN said it will seek a bilateral agreement for the mill’s situation regarding the existing environmental claims. An INEA document last week said CSN did not meet the demands of a conduct adjustment commitment term (TAC) signed in April last year.
The document set a series of obligations CSN should address, including reducing pollutant emissions. CSN argued at the time that out of the 15 items set by the TAC, it has met 12, while two other are just “day-to-day” procedures.
