Consumption of rolled and sheet steel plate in Mexico up 40 percent in August

Apparent consumption of rolled steel plate in Mexico maintained its uptrend in August, increasing 44.9 percent. Consumption of sheet steel plate also grew year-over-year, by 46.4 percent, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.

Rolled steel plates consumed in August totaled 226,000 metric tons (mt), while sheet steel plate consumption totaled 142,000 mt.

Regarding production, rolled plate increased 40.9 percent, year-over-year, to 193,000 mt, the eighth consecutive annual increase. Canacero information does not include production totals of sheet steel plate.

Imports of sheet plate reached 90,000 mt in August, that was 100 percent more compared to the same month last year. Imports of rolled plate totaled 44,000 mt in August, down 10.2 percent compared to August of last year.

In exports, Canacero only records a rolled plate export total of 11,000 mt, 62.1 percent less compared to the 29,000 mt in August 2022.

In the accumulated eight months, rolled plate consumption registered an annual increase of 40.0 percent to 1.71 million mt. Meanwhile, the consumption of sheet steel plate increased 54.9 percent to 1.14 million mt.

Imports in the first eight months of the year of sheet plate increased 127.5 percent to 787,000 mt. In contrast, rolled plate imports decreased 11.0 percent to 358,000 mt. On the accumulated exports side, rolled plate decreased 29.5 percent to 140,000 mt.
