Coal miners at Xstrata’s Tahmoor operation go on strike again

Coal miners at Anglo-Swiss miner and coking coal producer Xstrata Plc's Tahmoor operation in New South Wales, Australia have gone on strike for the second week in a row, for the three days up to next Friday. A strike last week at the mine had caused the suspension of production throughout the week.

Announcing the latest strike, the Swiss-based miner said the continual disruption had a "significant" impact on output at Tahmoor last week but did not give any numbers in terms of weekly loss.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, wage negotiations have been going on for the last 15 months between the company and the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) representing 380 workers at the mine which produces about 2 million mt of hard coking coal for the steel sector annually.

Xstrata is offering a 25 percent rise in base salary over the next four years, Australian press reports say.
