Chinese mills progress remarkably on energy saving

SteelOrbis Shanghai In 2005, the energy consumption per metric ton of steel at Chinese large- and medium-sized mills decreased from 755.29 kg in 2004 to 714.12 kg coal equivalent. Meanwhile, electricity consumption per metric ton of steel was down from 459.31 kwh to 452.24 kwh, while the fresh water consumption per metric ton dropped from 9.71 mt to 8.03 mt. The Chinese steel industry's energy-saving projections for the coming years are that, by the end of 2010, energy consumption per ton of steel should reach 685 kg coal equivalent. By the end of 2020, the energy consumption target per ton of steel has been set at 640 kg coal equivalent.
