China’s steel production slumps dramatically in October

China's crude steel production in October totaled 35.9012 million mt, down 7.3358 million mt or 17 percent year on year, an increase of 7.9 percentage points compared with the decline rate in September. Average daily production during the month reached 1.1581 million mt, down for a fourth consecutive month by 162,400 mt or 12.3 percent month on month. Meanwhile, crude steel production for the January-October period reached 427.2881 million mt, up 16.024 million mt or 3.9 percent year on year.

Taking imports and exports into consideration, the newly-added supply of crude steel to China's market in October totaled 32.1612 million mt, down 7.0108 million mt or 17.9 percent year on year. From January to October, the newly-added supply reached 384.4581 million mt, up 23.46 million mt or 6.5 percent.

In the month of October, China's exports of crude steel accounted for 13.8 percent of total national crude steel production; meanwhile, crude steel exports in the first ten months of this year constituted 13.4 percent of total domestic production.

China's pig iron production in October totaled 34.1314 million mt, down 6.8905 million mt or 16.8 percent year on year. At the same time, total pig iron production in the January-October period reached 399.4842 million mt, up 9.7073 million mt or 2.5 percent compared to the corresponding period in 2007.

China's finished steel production for October totaled 42.9295 million mt, down 6.0695 million mt or 12.4 percent year on year. On the other hand, national finished steel production from January to October inclusive reached 487.9112 million mt, up 27.126 million mt or 5.9 percent.

China's coke output for October totaled 21.9407 million mt, down 5.8314 million mt or 21 percent year on year. Meanwhile, national coke output for the January-October period reached 266.3236 million mt, up 12.9722 million mt or 4.9 percent year on year.

China's ferroalloy output totaled 1.3612 million mt in October, down 256,600 mt or 15.9 percent year on year. For the January-October period, on the other hand, national ferroalloy production reached 15.9192 million mt, up 1.7123 million mt or 12.1 percent year on year.

In October, China's iron ore output totaled 67.8497 million mt, up 7.5644 million mt or 12.5 percent compared with the same month last year. The January-October iron ore output reached 654.179 million mt, up 103.3028 million mt or 18.8 percent year on year.
