Brazilian steelmaker Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) said late this week it has extended an existing environmental license for its Presidente Vargas mill for a further 90 day-period.

The steelmaker has struggled since 2008 to keep the existing license at the mill located in the city of Volta Redonda, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The mill has a capacity of 5.8 million mt/year and operates two blast furnaces.

In January this year, a court denied a request of federal prosecutors to annul the environmental license of CSN. Prosecutors argued at the time a new a conduct adjustment commitment term (TAC) was needed. The TAC sets requirements a party must comply under a specific deal.

CSN said it is looking at a definite alternative to solve the mills environmental issues.
