Brazilian mining regulator, the National Mining Agency (ANM), halted 47 dams that did not provide a stability certificate by March 31, attesting the structures are safe.
“All dams that did not send their stability certificates are being halted and went up … (to the list) to be audited,” said Luiz Paniago, dam safety manager at ANM.
Out of the 47 halted dams, 25 belong to iron ore producer Vale. ArcelorMittal Mineração, the iron ore arm of ArcelorMittal Brazil, also had its Serra Azul dam halted, as it did not issue a stability certificate.
Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN)-owned Minérios Nacional (NAMISA) B2 Auxiliar dam was also halted.
