Rio De Janeiro's environmental protection agency announced Friday that it has fined steel company Companhia Siderugica Nacional (CSN) US$12 million for spilling toxic coal residues into the Paraiba do sul River-a part of water system that supplies water to the metropolitan region in Rio de Janeiro-on November 27.

CSN was also fined last year for spilling an "oily substance" into the same river.
