Brazil has asked the US government to reconsider a 25 percent import tariff at a World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting, according to media reports, although reports did not indicate whether Brazil will formally file a WTO panel request.

In a meeting with WTO’s general director, Roberto Azevedo, the Brazilian ambassador to the WTO, Evandro Didonet, said the US protectionist measures have reached a new level with the Trump administration.

“As we look forward to the ongoing year, we should face reality. These aren’t normal times,” Didonet said.

The Brazilian government said both the WTO and the world’s multi-lateral trade face “extremely serious” challenges.
