Major Australian coal exporter BHP Billiton Ltd. has declared force majeure on thermal coal shipments from Newcastle port because of flooding, though producer Rio Tinto said it had not done the same.

"We have declared force majeure as a result of the weather. We're hoping to rectify that as soon as possible," a BHP spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

She would not give details of shipments affected.
