The Australian mining giant BHP Billiton has announced that it is planning to increase its annual production capacity of coking coal to 67 million mt by the end of the 2017-18 fiscal year (ends June 2018), 30 million mt higher than the current level.
As BHP Billiton stated, its annual capacity of coking coal will exceed 67 million mt by 2018 if it completes the construction of its two joint ventures, i.e., BHP Billiton-Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) in which it holds a 50 percent stake, and BHP Billiton-Mitsui (BMC) in which it holds an 80 percent stake, and also taking into account the coal mine in New South Wales operated by its wholly-owned subsidiary Illawarra.
In 2010, BHP Billiton produced 37.17 million mt of coking coal.
