Liaoning Province-based Chinese steelmaker Benxi Iron and Steel Co. (Benxi Steel) has announced that in 2011 it registered record-low energy consumption per metric ton of crude steel for the fourth consecutive year.
In 2011, Benxi Steel's energy consumption per metric ton of crude steel produced declined to 671.8 kg of standard coal, 18.2 kg lower than the target for the year and equal to an annual saving of 69,400 mt of standard coal.
In June 2011, energy consumption per metric ton of crude steel at Benxi Steel amounted to 635 kg of standard coal, down 8.7 percent month on month or down 39 kg/mt year on year, constituting an all-time record monthly low.
