Global steelmaker ArcelorMittal has announced that it has commissioned a $63.2 million energy recovery and reuse boiler at its Indiana Harbor facility in the US. ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor has been recycling blast furnace gas to produce high pressure steam used to power the facility for almost three months.

According to ArcelorMittal's statement, the new boiler generates 333,000 MWh of power per year, reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 340,000 mt per year and saves the facility nearly $20 million in energy costs, which has the effect of lowering the production costs of steel by $5 per ton.

The Indiana Harbor facility is the largest steel mill in North America and home to blast furnace No. 7, the largest blast furnace in the US. Approximately 78 percent of the blast furnace gas generated by the blast furnace is used for heating stoves at the furnace and for making steam at boiler house No. 5.
