The government of the Indian state of Karnataka said it will allot 1,500 acres of land to the world's largest steelmaker ArcelorMittal within a month to build a new six million mt capacity steel plant in the state's iron ore-rich Bellary district, Indian press reports have said.

"Within one month, we will allot about 1,500 acres of land to ArcelorMittal. They will start work within two months," Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa told reporters.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, in June 2010 ArcelorMittal signed an agreement with the Karnataka government to invest Rupees 300 billion ($6.6 billion) in the southern Karnataka state in order to build a plant with an annual capacity of 6 million mt.

ArcelorMittal's similar steel projects in Orissa and Jharkhand have failed to take off.
