From May 19 to June 1 this year, ArcelorMittal Galati, Romania-based subsidiary of the world's largest integrated metals and mining company ArcelorMittal, will send about 200 workers from its heavy plate mill No. 2 on temporary leave for four days in rotation, due to the lack of heavy plate orders, Romanian newspaper Cotidianul has reported citing union leaders.
Accordingly, for the same reason, the plant management is considering the temporary stoppage of some mills, including the heavy plate and cold rolling mills.
Meanwhile, according to the data for the first quarter of the year, ArcelorMittal Galati has registered a year-on-year increase of about 20 percent in its crude steel output to approximately 500,000 mt. As SteelOrbis previously reported, in 2010 the plant plans to increase its crude steel output to 2.2-2.5 million mt from 1.7 million mt in 2009, and to double its production capacity to more than 4.2 million mt of crude steel per year as of January 2011, when the upgrade of its blast furnace No. 5 will be completed following an investment of about €53 million.
