Rumors that Mexican integrated steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA) could either merge or be sold to buyers such as Ternium have emerged recently in Mexican media.

This week, a media report by Zolaco said Mexico’s steel service center Villacero could also be a potential buyer, adding to reports that said Latin America-focused Ternium would buy the Mexican steelmaker.

The Zocalo media report said the AHMSA acquisition by Villacero was confirmed by an undisclosed government-level source.

Other undisclosed buyers should also present proposals this week. The Zolaco media report said Chinese buyers have already withdrawn from the AHMSA purchase dispute, following the coronavirus outbreak.

Separately, news site Vanguardia said a sale by March is likely. As previously reported by SteelOrbis, AHMSA could be sold or merged into another company by as much as $3 billion to $4 billion, according to Mexican media reports.
