A safe way for kids to play with guns?
An innovative program in Philadelphia will turn confiscated and surrendered handguns into playground equipment.
The program is hailed as the modern equivalent of swords-to-plowshares. In it thousands of guns are collected from gun amnesties programs whereby citizens are given an incentive to turn in their guns willingly as well as those confiscated by police, and melted down at the Coatesville
Scrap Iron and Metal Co. The newly fabricated steel is then sent to playground manufacturer Game Time, Inc. to be turned into jungle gyms, swing sets, and other kid-safe play equipment.
Though critics say the impact such programs actually have on real crime statistics is negligible, it is hard to argue that the intentions are not for the best.
