Spot market prices for US domestic hollow structural sections may be stable since our last report two weeks ago, at $50-$51 cwt. ($1102-$1124/mt or $1000-$1020/nt), ex-mill, but some SteelOrbis sources say they have concerns that if US HRC spot market prices continue to falter US HSS spot market may endure some corrections as well.

“If nothing shores up HRC [prices] we could see some downward adjustment in HSS transaction prices,” one source said. “Producers went a bit crazy with prices on the way up and the market seems to be finding its mark.”

US HSS price increases started in early December 2016, after US domestic flat rolled steel mills had announced four back-to-back price increases on hot rolled coil. Prior to HSS mills’ early-December announcement, US domestic HSS prices were trending at $41-$42 ($904-$926/mt or $820-$840/nt) ex-Midwest mill.
