Following the recent increases in the domestic market, Romanian long steel prices have moved to higher levels in the spot market this week, as rising production and logistical costs, along with the reduced availability of competitively-priced imports, continue to support price formation. In particular, the impact of CBAM-related costs and tightening quota limits has further constrained non-EU supply, limiting the downward pressure from imports and allowing domestic prices to strengthen further. At the same time, supply conditions in the local market remain relatively tight, reinforcing sellers’ firmer stance in negotiations. Demand, meanwhile, has shown a relatively stable performance, with buyers continuing to cover their needs despite ongoing financial constraints, contributing to a more resilient market structure and supporting the recent upward movement.
As a result, rebar prices have edged up to €625-640/mt ex-warehouse in Romania, from €620-635/mt last week, while in the wire rod segment prices have recorded a more pronounced increase, rising to €660-680/mt ex-warehouse from €640-650/mt previously, amid tighter availability in the market.
Meanwhile, the domestic rebar producer Beltrame Targoviste has not announced any new prices and remains largely inactive in the market. Most transactions continue to be concluded from existing stocks, while some market participants report that previously booked volumes at lower prices have been cancelled, with deliveries not fulfilled.
In the import segment, after initial interest was observed in Turkish material, buying interest has continued to be seen, suggesting that activity may pick up in the near term, though no confirmed transactions have been reported so far. In terms of pricing, Bulgarian suppliers have increased their rebar offers to €655-670/mt CPT, up from €645-660/mt CPT last week, while Greek suppliers have maintained a largely stable stance, with offers at €660-665/mt CFR for rebar and €655-660/mt CFR for wire rod.
Meanwhile, on the non-EU side, a downward adjustment has been observed, with Egyptian May shipment offers now reported at €540-555/mt CFR for rebar and €555-560/mt CFR for wire rod, down from €560-565/mt CFR and €565-570/mt CFR, respectively, for April shipment. At the same time, Turkish suppliers have revised their rebar offers slightly downward to €530-550/mt CFR, compared to €535-550/mt CFR previously, based on an exchange rate of €1 = $1.17 and estimated freight costs of €25-30/mt.
