German rebar buyers push for discounts

Domestic rebar prices in Germany have remained stable since early February, while demand has failed to recover. Buyers are still exerting pressure on suppliers due to low end-user activity.

Prices for local rebar are still at €650-680/mt ex-works for March-April production, SteelOrbis has learned. However, the mills are unwilling to announce any discounts over €10/mt for serious buyers, taking into account that their order books are fairly full and there is no rush to conclude immediate sales. "Producers have no problem with their sales and because of the pandemic buyers are still hesitating to import. Customers want to see some larger discounts because the mills were keeping their offers stable back when scrap prices had dropped. On the other hand, without any order from local producers, traders cannot feel safe, and that means we will continue to buy soon," a source told SteelOrbis.

In the export market, prices have also remained unchanged at €640-650/mt FOB. These levels are still unacceptable for buyers, but sellers do not want to update their prices because of their mostly full order books.
