Reference price for Brazilian slab exports increases after three-week stability

Brazilian slab exporters are negotiating deals at $510/mt, FOB conditions for basic commercial grades.

Such price compares to a reference price of $490/mt, valid over the last three weeks.

Sources mentioned that the increase reflects HRC prices in the US $51/mt higher than in the previous weeks, allowing for the partial $20/mt recovery of the Brazilian slab prices, which were priced in average at $535/mt between August 5, 2024, and March 1, 2025.

In March, the United States accounted for 90 percent of Brazilian slab exports, establishing it as the primary determinant in the pricing of Brazilian slab export agreements to all countries.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian slabs exporters maintain expectations that the 25 percent import tariff established by the US for all steel imports could be reduced for slabs, as the steel producers in the US are dependent from slabs imports to feed their local rolling operations.

Initial figures indicate that slab exports from Brazil in April are expected to be consistent with the 661,600 mt exported in March.
