Re-rollers in Turkey have made an attempt to increase their prices for coated steel over the past week, following the uptrend seen in the scrap and hot rolled coil (HRC) segments. However, domestic demand, though gradually improving, is still not strong enough for it to support a solid price increase for coated flat steel in the domestic market.
The rebound in import scrap prices in Turkey has triggered a $10-20/mt increase in the HRC segment, thus giving the re-rollers some grounds to increase their offers. As a result, prices for coated steel in Turkey have moved up by $10-30/mt over the past week. “We have to follow the price trend in HRC as it is our raw material. We see also an increase in price inquiries. Demand is improving slightly and buyers want to buy some material because they think prices will increase further with the end-user sectors resuming operations,” a producer told SteelOrbis.
On the export side, prices have increased by $20-30/mt, following the local market trend. Demand is still limited but price inquiries from Spain and Portugal continue to come. “Now we are also starting to receive price inquiries from Italy. Covid-19 measures have eased in all EU. This is very good news for us and we expect to increase our sales to the EU region shortly,” another re-roller told SteelOrbis.
