Chinese domestic steel plate market mostly moves sideways

During the week ending August 21, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have been mainly stable, with prices of common carbon medium plate and shipbuilding plate just indicating very slight increases. Transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.

During the given week, domestic steelmakers’ output volumes of steel plate have not indicated any significant rises, while inventory levels in the spot market have risen slightly. At the same time, inventory levels held by steelmakers have also increased, which may exert some negative pressure on steel plate prices. However, at present, steel plate producers have received sufficient orders from downstream users and traders and so they are unlikely to reduce their ex-works prices. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely move sideways in the coming week.
