During the week ending August 7, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have continued their increasing trend, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
During the given week, as ferrous metals futures and semi-finished steel prices in China have seen significant rises following the announcement of Hebei Province’s output reduction plans for the winter season (November 2017-March 2018), including cutting blast furnace output by 50 percent in Tangshan, Shijiazhuang and Handan, market participants have gained confidence and increased their offer prices for steel plate. Meanwhile, inventories of steel plate are at relatively low levels, providing support for prices. However, following the rapid rises seen in steel plate prices, downstream users have become more cautious about concluding purchases, resulting in low-to-medium levels of transaction activity. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will move up further in the coming week.
