During the week ending May 20, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have mostly edged down slightly, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
During the given week, HRC futures prices in China edged down first but increased later, though moving down again on May 20. Currently, steelmakers’ capacity utilization rates are at relatively high levels due to quite good profitability, and this increased output will exert a negative impact on steel plate prices. However, demand for steel plate has shown signs of slackening, which will negatively influence the market. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely move down in the coming week.
