Capesize (Atlantic and Pacific)

The Capesize market did a huge leap during the week: 5TC average gained almost $10,000/d going from $24,000/d to $33,000/d. Tubarao-Qingdao route had the biggest jump: it gained overall $3/mt in 7 days reaching a peak on Wednesday and Friday closing at $23.37/mt. Brazilian RV increased as well: it gained $6,000/d from previous week closing on Friday at $29,250/d. Saldanha Bay-Qingdao route followed the same path gaining $2/mt and closing the week at almost mid $17/mt. W Australia-Qingdao route was in a positive track as well, even if it was a bit unstable at the beginning of the week: it gained more than $1/mt closing at high $9/mt. Pacific RV was pretty strong as well with some high numbers fixed between Thursday and Friday: it closed on Friday at $28,750/d after gaining more than $5,000/d. The market in the Atlantic basin was even stronger than in the Pacific: Fronthaul was $10,000/d higher than previous week touching mid $50,000/d. TransAtlantic RV followed a similar path almost doubling numbers from previous week and reaching $40,000/d. Backhaul followed a similar trend: it gained $10,000/d in a week with some very high fixtures on Tubarao-Rotterdam route and closed the week at $14,000/d.

 

Panamax (Atlantic and Pacific)

In the Atlantic basin USG and BSea were the main drivers: on Fronthaul, Panamaxes were fixed at $16,500/d + 650,000 bb basis dely aps USG while some nice Kamsarmaxes in the $17,000/d + 700,000 bb. Fronthaul from BSea was active too: Panamaxes were fixed at mid $23,000/d basis dely dop Port Said and at low $25,000/d basis dely aps Canakkale. Some units were fixed at $15,000/d + 500,000 bb basis dely aps ECSAm for trips to Spore/Japan and at $15,000/d basis dely aps ECSAm on TA RV to Skaw/Gibraltar. Healthy rates recorded in the Baltic basin thanks to a shorter position list: a Kamsarmax was fixed at $13,000/d for a quick Baltic RV. Instead, a longer TA was rumoured at mid $11,500/d basis dely dop Gibraltar with redely Skaw/Gibraltar. After a stable start of the week some fluctuations were recorded in the Pacific basin. During the week there was a sharp drop due to an oversupply and holidays in F East. At the end of the week, few units headed over SAfr and ECSAm generating higher levels in the Pacific. A Kamsarmax was fixed at $13,000/d on Australia RV; similar rates were rumoured on NoPac RV. Another Kamsarmax was fixed at $13,000/d basis dely dop Manila on Australia-India. Limited activity from MEG and SAfr: a Kamsarmax was fixed at $13,000/d + 300,000 bb basis dely aps Richards Bay to India.

 

Handy (Far East/Pacific)

The market was substantially stable both on Handysize and on Supramax units, with a gradual decrease of activity at the end of the week due to the Golden week. Very few fixtures were reported: rates on Supramax units were stable in the mid $9,000/d basis dely N China on Pacific RV like on trips via Indonesia to S China basis S China dely. Rates on trips to India instead were still in the mid/high $8,000/d. In the Handysize segment, rates on trips from SE Asia to China were around $9,000/d while rates on trips from N China to SE Asia remained a bit under $8,000/d.

 

Handy (North Europe/Mediterranean)

In Cont, a 34,000 dwt was fixed from Baltic to Algeria at a time charter equivalent close to $20,000/d basis dely dop and another 34,000 dwt in ballast from E Med was fixed for dely Ushant at $13,500/d for a trip into Baltic. At the end of the week higher levels were reported: a 38,000 dwt was fixed at $24,000/d basis dely dop UK for a trip into Algeria with grains. Rates on trips to USG were at $14/15,000/d basis dely ARA: similar levels were recorded to ECSAm. In the Supramax/Ultramax segment, a 57,000 dwt was fixed at $17,750/d basis dely ARA with scrap to Med. Rates on Fronthaul were rumoured in the low $20,000/d while rates on trips to USG were around $12/13,000/d. The market in BSea kept showing good levels: the shortage supply was highly compensating the slow exportations keeping rates generally high. In the Handysize segment, a 35,000 dwt on intra Med biz was rumoured at $11,000/d, rates on trips to Cont were at $10,000/d. Rates on trips to ECSAm and USG followed the same trend of trips to Cont, slightly decreasing to $12,000/d to ECSAm and slightly more to USG. Rates on trips to FEast were in the high teens at $18/18,500/d depending on destinations. Rates on Supramax and Ultramax units saw good numbers for trips to F East: Supramax units were rumoured around $23,000/d basis dely Canakkale and Ultramax around $24,000/d. Rates on shorter trips to MEG or India were around $25,000/d or even more. On intra Med biz, rates on Supramax units were around $12,500/d and around $13,000/d on Ultramax units (which discounted around $1,000/d for redely Cont).

 

Handy (USA/N.Atlantic/Lakes/S.America)

Similar levels of previous week both in the Supramax and in the Ultramax segments: activity was decent although units and cargoes in the area remained balanced. On TransAtlantic RV, rates on Supramax units were still in the $15,000/d and around $17,000/d on Ultramax units. On Fronthaul, rates on Ultramax units were in the mid/high $20,000/d while on Supramax were closer to $20,000/d-low $20,000/d. The Handysize segment maintained the same strength showed in previous weeks with a very short position list. On TransAtlantic RV, 32/35,000 dwt units were rumoured around $13,000/d while larger 36/39,000 dwt units were in the $16,000/d. The market in ECSAm was still strong both in the Handysize and in the Supramax/Ultramax segments. A 60,000 dwt was rumoured at $15,000/d+500,000 bb basis dely aps Recalada for a Fronthaul biz to Iraq with grains while a fancy 60,000 dwt was fixed at $14,750/d+475,000 bb basis dely aps S Brazil for one time charter trip to SE Asia with grains. In the Handysize segment, a nice 32,000 dwt was rumoured at $11,500/d basis dely aps Recife for one time charter trip to WAfr with grains: owners tried asking $13,000/d basis dely aps.

 

Handy (Indian Ocean/South Africa)

From WCI, a 56,000 dwt was rumoured around mid $10,000/d for trip via MEG to Bangladesh. The market in ECI remained comparatively soft: Supramax units were rumoured around $10,000/d-under $11,000/d with ECI iron ore to China. Not much came to light from SAfr: charterers evaluated Ultramax units around $12,000/d+200,000 bb with coal to Pakistan/WCI and around $11,000/d+100,000 bb for Supramax units. Towards the end of the week, a eco Ultramax was fixed on subs at high $12,000/d+high200,000 bb for SAfr-India and Ultramax units were rumoured at $13,000/d+300,000 bb for trips via SAfr to F East.
