Pennsylvania truck driver too lazy to use steel The I-75 southbound entrance ramp from Haverhill Drive in Toledo, Ohio was closed for half the day Tuesday after a flatbed semi lost its 40,000-pound load of 3 foot by 5 foot steel sheets just before 11am. The semi was on its way from Erie, Michigan to New Jersey when 58-year-old driver David Wilson of Pennsylvania said the load started to shift around. The man tried to pull over, but it was too late, and the load was lost. Mr. Wilson was cited for having an insecure load. “He used nylon straps to tie down the sheets because he was too lazy to use steel,” Toledo police Sgt. Richard Murphy told press. Steel mesh used to corral big cats at Houston Zoo A new feature has been added to the Houston Zoo that allows zoo guests to get close (but not TOO close) to the resident African lions and Indochinese tigers. Until now, the big cats could only be viewed through panes of clear plastic, and the cats no interaction with the keepers. On Wednesday, the zoo unveiled a new feature at the lion and tiger exhibit– the plastic panels have been replaced with thin but strong steel mesh. The new steel mesh windows will allow visitors to watch the trainers work with the lions and tigers behind the scenes. The training sessions will allow the kitties to “stretch their bodies and their minds,” according to zoo officials. The training sessions will be held once a day, and twice on Saturdays and Sundays. Gateway Arch movie tells the story behind the steel A new documentary film has been made about one of the most recognizable steel structures in America - The Gateway Arch in St. Louis. The film, which includes historical re-enactments and narration by actor Kevin Kline, focuses not only on the construction, but the story behind the arch. "It was quite a leap for the jurors to pick that design," said co-director Scott Huegerich said. "The technology didn't even exist. In fact, some of the jurors didn't think it could be built." The film tells the whole story of the Arch's construction, debunking the common myth that during construction, the engineers were worried that the top section of the Arch wouldn't fit between the two stainless steel legs. Mr. Huegerich told press that while it's true that construction was halted in 1964, it was because the US Park Service wanted to investigate a different concern; the engineers were afraid that when the legs were jacked apart to insert the last piece, the steel would buckle and collapse. However, the engineers were ultimately successful, and the top portion of the arch was successfully installed on October 28, 1965. The film is showing one night only, this Saturday at 7:30pm, at the Fox Theater in Saint Louis, Missouri. Invest in steel trees – They'll still be standing after all the real ones are dead! Love gigantic lawn ornaments? From the same people that brought you the giant steel cacti, now you can order a giant steel palm tree! The steel “tree,” designed by steel sculptor Eric Carroll, comes with a brown steel trunk and green steel fronds, and can also have misting and lighting systems included. The smallest size is 17 feet tall and costs $7150. l Mr. Carroll's steel cacti are also still available through his Steel Cacti Company website, and come in four finishes: galvanized, patina rust, verdigris, and the modernist mirror finish. The lowest price to start creating your steel oasis is $900 for a standard sized saguaro cactus made of cold rolled steel. Get one here.
