WTO to decide on probe into U.S. tariffs May 22

On May 22, The World Trade Organization (WTO) will consider a request by the EU to investigate whether U.S. tariffs on steel imports are legally acceptable. The European Commission plans to request a panel of WTO experts to rule on the safeguard measures when the WTO's dispute settlement body meets then. U.S. officials claim they have acted within WTO rules but the EU is claiming that they have not. The EU's request for action on the steel tariffs will be the first to be considered after a 60-day consultation period between the U.S. and EU, that expired on May 7 and failed to bring the two toward any resolution.
