World pig iron output down 2.8 percent in 2015

In December last year, world pig iron production amounted to 89.619 million mt, decreasing by 1.1 percent compared to November and declining by 7.66 percent compared to the same month of 2014, according to the preliminary data covering 38 countries accounting for approximately 99 percent of total world blast furnace pig iron production, released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
 
Meanwhile, in 2015 world pig iron production totaled 1.15 billion mt, down 2.8 percent compared to 2014.
 
In 2015, pig iron output in Asia amounted to 890.87 million mt, down 2.9 percent, with 691.41 million mt produced by China, declining by 3.5 percent, 81.01 million mt produced by Japan, down 3.41 percent, and 57.33 million mt produced by India, rising by 3.93 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis. Meanwhile, in the same year, EU countries produced 93.04 million mt of pig iron, down 2.25 percent, while the CIS produced 77.86 million mt, decreasing by two percent, both on year-on-year basis.
