The trade union FNV said that workers at Tata Steel’s IJmuiden plant in the Netherlands went on strike on June 10 in order to protest against planned job cuts, demanding job security and the extension of employee benefits.
An FNV spokesman said that the workers want to guarantee that there will be no job cuts in addition to seeking other demands, adding that this is the first strike in 28 years and that it is hard to say how long the strike will continue.
According to the Dutch unions, Tata Steel plans to cut 1,000 jobs in the Netherlands within the scope of the reorganization of the company’s European activities. Tata Steel Europe said that there would be no compulsory layoffs at its IJmuiden plant, as previously reported by SteelOrbis.
