Wire rod production in Mexico posted its fifth annual decline so far this year in May, decreasing 19.7 percent year-over-year to 233,000 metric tons (mt), according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.
Apparent consumption decreased 5.4 percent in May, year-over-year, to 246,000 mt. Despite the percentage drop, May produced the highest volume of wire rod so far this year. The lowest volume was in March with 213,000 mt.
The manufacture and consumption of wire rod in Mexico occupies the fifth position of all finished steel products.
Exports of wire rod in May decreased 87.8 percent, totaling only 5,000 mt.
In the cumulative January-May, wire rod production decreased 16.2 percent, year-over-year, to 1.09 million mt. Consumption decreased 4.4 percent to 1.11 million mt.
