Vale’s co-owned slab producer Companhia Siderurgica do Pecem (CSP) reached in late December a 1 million mt production milestone, according to Ceara state officials.

The company, which is owned by Vale, Posco and Dongkuk, started up a meltshop and commenced slab output at its mill located in Sao Goncalo do Amarante in the state of Ceara on June 20, 2016.

In late December, the company held a ceremony to celebrate the 1 million mt slab production milestone, which was reached in 191 days, between June 20, 2016 and December 28, 2016.

“It took 48 months to build the mill. … We [then] started exporting [slab] and [we] keep integrating ourselves more and more with the local communities, the [local] labor market, and [the local] economy,” the company’s CEO, Eduardo Parente, said in the ceremony, which was attended by state officials, including the governor of Ceara, Camilo Santana.

CSP is expected to increase Ceara’s state industrial GDP by 48 percent.

Local newspaper O Povo said CSP produced in 2016 a 300mm thick slab that is expected to be delivered to a mill in the Czech Republic in January this year.
