Vale slab JV to continue production despite Covid-19

Brazilian slab producer Companhia Siderurgica do Pecem (CSP), a joint venture between Vale, Posco and Dongkuk Steel, plans to continue operations despite the Covid-19 outbreak, a media report from Reuters said.

CSP said it has continued operations so far within the goals it had already set for the year, producing 222,432 mt of slab in March, which is line with the company’s average production levels.

The company is reportedly seeking new markets to cope with declining domestic slab demand, and it expects to find undisclosed alternative markets, so it can maintain a certain production level that would allow it to keep it producing while saving jobs, the media report said.

Several Brazilian steelmakers, including Gerdau and Usiminas, recently announced reduced production, while also halting blast furnaces.
