After US Steel announced in mid-June that it would idle two blast furnaces at its Great Lakes Works and Gary Works facilities, the company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification earlier this month indicating that it plans to lay off fewer than 200 workers in the coming weeks at the Great Lakes facility.

US Steel said the layoffs could last six months or longer, affecting nearly every area of the Great Lakes Works, including the blast furnace and finishing operations.

A United Steelworkers union official told media that layoffs are also planned for the Gary Works plant in Indiana.
