US steel imports drop 3.1 percent in April

According to preliminary census data, US monthly steel imports in April 2017 decreased 3.1 percent from March (census data) to total 3,006,962 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 33.5 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel imports in April totaled $2.51 billion, compared to $2.46 billion in March and $1.67 billion in April 2016.

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the finished steel import market share was an estimated 27 percent in April and is estimated at 26 percent YTD.
 
Top sources for US steel imports in April include: Canada, with 474,833 mt; Russia, with 381,032 mt; Korea, with 290,289 mt; Brazil, with 289,634 mt; and Mexico, with 286,535 mt.
 
Major steel products imported in April include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 713,472 mt; OCTG, at 310,468 mt; HDG, at 298,692 mt; CRC, at 191,801 mt; HRC, at 162,287 mt; and wire rod, at 138,723 mt.
