According to the data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC), US rebar imports in August this year slid 71.68 percent year on year to 21,370 metric tons, while a decrease of 27.37 percent was registered compared to July. Meanwhile, the total value of these imports amounted to $13.65 million, decreasing by 27.89 percent month on month and down 81.84 percent compared to August 2008.
In August, Mexico was the largest rebar exporter to the US market with 13,910 metric tons. Mexico was followed by Turkey, with 4,135 metric tons, and by the Dominican Republic with 3,170 metric tons.
In August, the average import price of rebar in the US amounted to $638/mt, down $4.67/mt or 0.73 percent from July levels, and indicating a decrease of $357.52/mt or 35.88 percent from $996.41/mt in August 2008.
On the other hand, in the January-August period of this year, US rebar imports totaled 303,670 metric tons, decreasing by 59.66 percent, while the value of these imports amounted to $187 million, down 67.77 percent, both compared to the corresponding period of 2008.
In the first eight months of this year, 47.62 percent of US rebar imports were from Mexico, while 43.27 percent of total rebar imports came from Turkey.
