US plates in coil imports down 25 percent in August

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of plates in coil totaled 72,130 mt in August 2019, down 25.0 percent from July and down 36.2 percent from August 2018 levels. By value, plates in coil imports totaled $46.8 million in August 2019, compared to $66.4 million in the previous month and $92.5 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most plates in coil from Canada in August, with 51,192 mt, compared to 63,951 mt in July and 65,245 mt in August 2018. Other top sources of imported plates in coil in August include Sweden, with 6,855 mt; Netherlands, with 5,989 mt; Korea, with 2,017 mt; and Germany, with 1,431 mt.
