The US Department of Commerce (DOC) has announced the initiation of a countervailing duty (CVD) investigation on tin mill products from China, in response to a petition filed by United States Steel Corporation and the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union (USW).

The DOC will determine whether tin mill products from China are being unfairly subsidized by the Chinese government.

The petition, filed on April 9, 2026, alleges subsidy rates above de minimis. The US International Trade Commission (ITC) is scheduled to issue its preliminary determination on or around May 26, 2026. If affirmative, the DOC's preliminary CVD determination would follow on or around July 3, 2026.
