US auto sales increase for Chrysler and Ford, while GM’s numbers slip

The US' three major automakers, Chrysler Group, Ford Motor Company and General Motors released their US sales results for January on Wednesday.

Auburn Hills, Michigan-based Chrysler reported US sales of 101,149 units for January, a 44 percent increase. This marks the highest January sales since 2008 and 22nd consecutive month in which sales rose.

Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford Motor Company reported sales of 136,710 units in January, reflecting a 7 percent increase from a year earlier. The month of January marked the best January sales month in Ford since 2008.

Detroit, Michigan-based General Motors sold 167,962 units in January--a 6 percent decrease over January 2011. Chevrolet was the front runner for the company with passenger car sales increasing 13 percent, while the total passenger car sales for GM increased 3 percent in January.
