Ukrainian steelmakers issue January-November output data

The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first eleven months of 2009.

Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel product output by 31.5 percent and its pipe production by 60 percent year on year, to about 2.76 million mt and 36,000 mt respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 27.5 percent, its pig iron output by 23.9 percent and its agglomerate production by 33.7 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 3.843 million, 3.23 million and 7.2 million.

During the first eleven months of 2009, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 21.1 percent to 4.176 million mt, its pig iron production by 18.3 percent to about 3.61 million mt and its finished steel production by 20.6 percent to 3.86 million mt, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, Azovstal's metallurgical coke output registered a drop of 12.1 percent year on year to about 1.84 million mt.

In January-November 2009, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced about 4.06 million mt of finished steel - down 20.4 percent, 4.54 million mt of crude steel - down 23.9 percent, 3.975 million mt of pig iron - down 26.2 percent, and about 7.11 million mt of agglomerate - down 21.9 percent, all compared to the first eleven months of 2008.

During the period in question, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) reduced its pig iron production by 15.7 percent year on year, its crude steel production by 18 percent, its finished steel production by 17 percent, but increased its agglomerate production by 2.9 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 3.02 million, 3.38 million, 3.09 million and 4.175 million.

During the first eleven months of this year, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) decreased its pig iron production by 19.3 percent to 1.92 million mt, its crude steel production by 14.2 percent to about 2.176 million mt, its finished steel output by 18.3 percent to 2.06 million mt, all compared with the same period last year.

Meanwhile, during the given period, the Ukrainian steelmaker Zaporizhstal registered a 16.2 percent decrease in its finished steel production and a 17.5 percent decline in its crude steel production year on year, to 2.52 million mt and 3.02 million mt respectively. Zaporizhstal's agglomerate production went down by 11.7 percent year on year and its pig iron production declined by 17.1 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were about 4.41 million and 2.514 million.

In the January-November period, Dneprovsky Iron and Steel Works named after F. Dzerzhinsky increased its crude steel production by 4.54 percent year on year to 3.13 million mt and its pig iron production by 5.1 percent year on year to 2.91 million mt. Meanwhile, during the period in question, the plant also increased its output of finished steel by 22 percent to three million mt and upped its agglomerate production by 6.4 percent to 4.376 million mt, both compared to the same period last year.
