In 2014, Ukraine's coal mining output decreased by 22 percent year on year to 65 million mt, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry. Of 150 mines in the country, only 69 are working.

Because of the domestic coal shortage, Ukraine plans to import 620,000 mt from Russia, despite its military support of separatists in eastern Ukraine. This coal would cost around $73/mt. The ministry also plans to import coal from South Africa, Australia and Vietnam
