In April this year, Turkey's steel scrap import volume increased by 23.8 percent month on month to 1.75 million metric tons, down 6.92 percent year on year, according to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). The value of this import volume totaled $643.54 million, up 20.61 percent month on month and decreasing by 13.84 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, in the first four months of this year Turkey's steel scrap import volume decreased by 1.26 percent to 6.15 million mt, while the value of these imports totaled $2.35 billion, down five percent, both on year-on-year basis.

In the first four months, Turkey imported 1.31 million mt of steel scrap from the US, down 33.47 percent year on year, though the US remained first among Turkey's steel scrap import sources in the given period, ahead of Russia which exported 834,428 mt of steel scrap to Turkey, up 81.57 percent year on year. In April alone, Turkey's steel scrap imports from the US increased by 82.63 percent month on month and decreased by 19 percent year on year to 415,722 mt.

On the other hand, according to the statistics released by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC), in the first four months Turkey's scrap imports from the US totaled 1.04 mt, down 38.82 percent year on year. Thus, there seems to be a difference between the TUIK and the US ITC data. The article, "US iron and steel scrap exports up 10.6% in Apr from Mar", written considering the US ITC data, is shown below:
