In March this year, Turkey's steel scrap import volume increased by 37.52 percent month on month to 1.41 million metric tons, down 8.65 percent year on year, according to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). The value of this import volume totaled $533.57 million, up 30.99 percent month on month and decreasing by 13.63 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, in the first quarter of this year Turkey's steel scrap imports volume increased by 1.19 percent to 4.36 million mt, while the value of these imports totaled $1.70 billion, down 1.17 percent, both on year-on-year basis.

In the first quarter of this year, Turkey imported 894,466 mt of steel scrap from the US, down 38.57 percent year on year, though the US remained first among Turkey's steel scrap import sources in the given period, ahead of Russia which imported 618,588 mt of steel scrap from Turkey, up 87.24 percent year on year. In March, Turkey's steel scrap imports from the US decreased by 59.15 percent year on year to 227,636 mt.

On the other hand, according to the statistics released by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC), in the first quarter Turkey's scrap imports from the US totaled 712,376 mt , down 56.61 percent, while the volume in March alone decreased by 36.24 percent to 359,671 mt, both on year-on-year basis. Thus, there seems to be a difference between the TUIK and the US ITC reports. The article, "US iron and steel scrap exports down 36.3% in Q1", which is written considering the US ITC data, is shown below:
